Gallup is now out with a new poll that tests a trial heat between president Obama and a generic Republican. The result show Obama ahead 43% to 40%, a result that is statistically unchanged from the results of the same poll taken before the bin Laden killing. Gallup also finds that the president's job approval has moved up. Gallup explains that the main increase in job approval numbers has come among Republicans whose Obama approval levels went from 10% to 21%; these same folks almost uniformly will not vote to re-elect the president.
The Gallup results in this poll are almost exactly the same as the Rasmussen results I wrote about yesterday. As of now, it is going to be a close election.
