The GOP Presidential Debate

I just finished watching the Republican Presidential Debate and i have to say that I was quite surprised. I had very little interest in the event as I tuned in, but I quickly was riveted by it. Simply put, I thought that two of the candidates did a great job. Tim Pawlenty seemed totally in control every time the questions were directed to him. His closing statement was a bit weak, but his responses on the issues wereboth insightful and clear. Herman Cain was direct with a no nonsense approach to each issue. He was able to take a somewhat astonishing position that he did not know what to do yet in Afghanistan and set it forth in a way that it seemed both reasonable and proper. He also had almost a monopoly on the humor in the evening. Needless to say, Cain's career as a talk show host served him well in this format. So much for the winners. Rick Santorum was nowhere near as good as Pawlenty or Cain, but he did not embarrass himself. That is something that Ron Paul could not say truthfully; some of his answers were so garbled that it seemed as if he was thinking in another language and then translating his points into English. Gary Johnson was different for sure. He did get the night's most ridiculous question: he was told that Trump has a reality show and asked what would his own show be if he could have a reality show. He missed the obvious answer of saying that his show would be a day in the life of the president of the United States. Even so, who cares what his show would be. he is running for president, not TV star.

My guess is that if anyone besides me watched the debate (and we will need to see the ratings to determine that) we will see an uptick in the polls for Cain and Pawlenty.
