After reading the coverage of the debt ceiling negotiations and today's Obama presser, I feel like I am watching a rerun of Let's Make a Deal. I have now read at least three articles in the main stream media breathlessly describing how John Boehner and the Republicans "rejected" a deal offered by president Obama that included a comprehensive package. Of course, the deal to which the articles refer is a lot like the one that used to be behind curtain number three. Monty Hall used to offer contestants whatever was behind the curtain without ever telling them what it was. In much the same way, the press tells us that the Obama "deal" is comprehensive, but they do not tell us what the components of the deal are. How in the owrld is a sane person to determine what is actually going on when all we get from the media is spin? It is called the News media since it is supposed to have actual news in it. I am not interested in the view of some reporter as to whether or not an unknown deal is complete, valid, good for the country or even legal. Since the reporter does not know the actual content of the deal, it is safe to say that the reporter cannot validly tell us whether or not the deal is a good one or even a comprehensive one.
Maybe Obama should have used today's press conference to provide details to the American people. Of course, that would have meant that he was actually doing the job to which he was elected, and that does not go down well at the White House.
