There's big news out of Syria this morning: the Assad regime launched a major attack in the Damascus suburbs using chemical weapons against troops and civilians in the region. According to reports from the site of the attack, scores of people were killed in the gas attack, and most were not soldiers. This is terrible news, and it is also a direct challenge to the USA. For the last few months, as more and more evidence has appeared that Assad (and his allies Iran and terrorist Hezbollah) are using chemical weapons again, the Trump administration has warned that such use should not happen. The warnings were a reminder of the retaliation launched by the President against Assad a little more than a year ago during the last major chemical weapon attack by Assad. At that time, a cruise missile strike by the USA took out 25% of Assad's aircraft and destroyed the base from which the chemical weapons were launched.
Some sort of response by President Trump and US forces is likely. My prediction is that it will come in the form of another one-off attack like last time. Hopefully, the level of pain inflicted on the Assad forces will be sufficient to deter continuing use of chemical weapons.
In just the last 20 minutes, President Trump has been tweeting about the chemical attack. It certainly sounds like a response is coming. Trump blames Assad as well as his backers including Iran and Russia.
