Bombs Fall On Syria

As if it wasn't already a crazy news day, tonight the combined forces of the US, UK and France launched attacks on three chemical weapons targets in Syria.  This was retaliation for the most recent chemical weapons attacks by the Assad regime on its own people.  The targets chosen are key points in the infrastructure used by Assad regime forces to manufacture and deliver additional chemical weapons.  We don't have a real assessment of the damage yet; that will come tomorrow once it is light in Syria.  We do know that not all of the chemical weapons facilities in Syria were destroyed.  The targets were chosen to minimize the chance of civilian casualties as well as troops from other countries.

The nonsense about the attack has already begun flowing out in full force.

First, the Syrians claim that they shot down 13 US cruise missiles.  That's an obvious lie.  There are no defensive anti-missile systems in the Syrian arsenal that would be capable of shooting down one cruise missile, let alone 13.  Initial reports say that the only defense attempted by the Syrians came in the form of SAM anti-aircraft missiles.  Such missiles cannot bring down cruise missiles.

Second, there are also claims on Arab TV that the main airport in Damascus was flattened.  That too is silly.  The coalition has announced the identity of the three targets hit.  They don't include the Damascus airport.  There is no reason for the USA to be silent about destroying that airport if we did it.  It did not happen.

Third, the Russians are talking about consequences of the attack being the fault of Washington.  Moscow is threatening retaliation.  So far, however, nothing has happened.  I seriously doubt anything will happen of that sort.  Russia is not going to move towards a nuclear war or similar confrontation just because three chemical weapons plants are destroyed in Syria.

Fourth, the idiots on the left are whispering that this attack was launched only to cover up domestic problems of the President with the special counsel.  Of course, that means that the White House is truly prescient since Assad launched his chemical weapons strike that led to tonight's bombing before all of the recent moves by Mueller.  How did Trump ever arrange all that.

Finally, there are a number of people especially on TV who question the basis for the attack and the logic of America trying to stop the use of chemical weapons in Syria or elsewhere.  I'm sure these people are speaking in good faith, but they clearly don't understand what is happening.  Chemical weapons were outlawed after World War I for a very good reason:  they kill horribly and indiscriminately.  They are not weapons of war but rather weapons again civilization.  If the USA sits idle and accepts that these weapons will be used in Syria, will we take action if they get used in Italy?  How about if they get used by terrorists in Mexico.  Should we react when there's a major attack with chemical weapons in downtown Montreal?  Maybe we can ignore such use also when chemical weapons get used in Chicago.  The reality is that America has decided long ago to work to stop the use of chemical weapons.  Even Barack Obama tried to stop the use of these weapons in Syria, although he dithered and ultimately did nothing aside from signing an agreement that accomplished nothing.

Tonight, Americans should stand as one in support of this action by our armed forces and those of the UK and France.  This was not an action for national conquest.  No one is trying to do anything in this attack other than stop future chemical attacks of any sort.  It's a goal worthy of these three nations' efforts.  We should applaud it.
