I was struck by something this afternoon that showed just how weak the support is for the Obama proposal to raise taxes on those earning over $200,000. The Washington Post has an on-line poll in which it asks "should Congress extend the Bush tax cuts?" As of a few moments ago, 15,200 folks had voted and 53% supported the Obama position. So Obama gets majority support, right? But wait, this is the Washington Post. Together with the New York Times, the Post is one half of the liberal one-two media punch of the Obama-supporting media complex. The readers of the Post are part of Obama's core constituency. And only 53% of these liberals support Obama!
Oh, I know that there are others who read the Post site. Certainly, I read it today and I am not part of the Obama cadre. Nevertheless, the point is that the overwhelming majority of those on the site are liberals. Obama ought to get 85 or 90% support for his position on taxes if his base truly approves of it. but he is getting 53%!
My guess is that this week's push for tax hikes on the upper incomes will soon disappear like many of the previous attack lines from the Obama campaign.
