I noticed today that there I saw four different articles about how inaction by Congress in dealing with the so-called fiscal cliff at the end of this year is driving down the economy. It is no coincidence that these articles just all spontaneously appeared at the same time. It is part of the Obama's campaign's effort to deflect discussion from the failures of president Obama to deal with the troubles in the economy.
Let's be clear. As of now, on January 1, 2013, tax rates will rise on all Americans when the Bush tax cuts expire. At the same time, the automatic spending cuts agreed to during the battle over raising the debt ceiling will also kick in. The payroll tax cut in place for the last two years also expires on that day. There is more, but these are the principal changes that make up the fiscal cliff. After January, the federal government is scheduled to take in about an extra $400 billion more each year in revenue while spending will go down by about $150 billion.
The media wants to blame Republicans for "obstructionism" since nothing has been done to modify these coming changes. Let's look at that charge.
1) First of all, who is it who put these changes in place? The answer is simple: the tax changes were all established by president Obama and the Democrats in December of 2010. The spending cuts and end to the payroll tax cut were agreed to by both Republican and Democrat congressmen and senators and were signed into law by Obama. The last of these deals was only six months ago. So, on balance, the bulk of the problem is the result of the actions of the Democrats.
2) What is the plan offered by the Democrats that the Republicans have been obstructing? Again, the answer is simple: there is no plan from the Democrats. Indeed, Republicans have offered two different plans to modify the spending cuts and Harry Reid and the Senate Democrats have rejected both. There is no plan from either side to prolong the payroll tax holiday. There is also no plan from the Democrats to do anything about the end of the Bush tax cuts. No bills have been offered. The senate, with its Democrat majority, has not voted on anything remotely connected to these tax cuts. In other words, the Democrats have no plan that is being obstructed.
So, the conclusion is a simple one: America has a president that ought to be leading the country towards a better economic future. Unfortunately we do not have such a man in office. Obama has no plan. It is a terrible situation for Obama's re-election campaign. As a result, in order to hide Obama's failure to lead, the campaign is having its toadies in the media write articles that level phony charges against the Republicans. Sadly, the Obamacrats have now decided that lying is the best policy. Let's hope they are wrong.
