The Romney Pick for Vice President

Today's boomlet for vice president is pushing Condi Rice as Romney's pick. She is the headline on Drudge, Peggy Noonan is waxing poetic in the Wall Street Journal about the prospects of Condi on the ticket, and a bunch of other pundits are shouoting "Huzzah!" as they think of the choince. It makes me wonder whether or not these folks have nothing better to do.

Let's just lay the truth out there: Condoleeza Rice would be a disaster as Romney's pick fo VP. Think about it.

1) The campaign is about the economy, not foreign policy. Rice has less experience with economic matters than Sarah Palin had with foreign policy when she was chosen.

2) Rice is a creature of the Bush administration. That's it, nothing more. Sure, she is an academic, but that is not a prescription for success as president. Indeed, much of the GOP base is sick to death of academics trying to use their theories to rule in Washington. We need folks with real world experience. The whole point of the Romney campaign has been to leverage Mitt's business experience. Condi does not fit in there. But, there is the Bush administration experience. Condi was involved in the decision to bring the Iraq war. That's a loser. Condi is a clear reminder of George W. Bush, someone that Republicans had better keep out of the limelight in the campaign. In short, Condi would reinforce the pathetic whine of the Obama campaign that everything is Bush's fault.

3) Condi is pro-choice. How could Romney, who is suspect on social issues that the GOP base considers important, pick a pro-choice VP candidate? Does he want to limit the enthusiasm in the base? I don't think so.

4) Condi has no group of supporters that she can bring to the ticket. None. She has never run for office; she has no following. She does not even have an ethnic group she could attract. Blacks are not going to vote for Romney over Obama because Condi is on the ticket. Women are not going to change their votes because a woman is on the ticket. We saw that in 2008 with Palin.

So Rice has no plusses and a whole host of minuses. There is no way that Romney should pick her. I doubt he will.
