Can We Focus on Spending

Over the last few weeks, Washington and the media have been focusing on everything but the important stuff.  How many stories have you heard on gun control issues recently?  The subject dominates nearly every news show even though it is not of great importance to the future of the nation.  Sure, a tragedy like the one in Newtown was horrible and we need to do what we can to stop it from happening again, but it is not something that will determine the future of America.  Similarly, the endless debate about raising the debt ceiling is of little importance.  Everyone already knows that the debt ceiling will be raised.  The time from here until the vote is actually taken is just political theater.  Nevertheless, the issue gets replayed and replayed in the media.

The real issue of the moment is doing something so that the debt will stop piling up.  There is a need to cut spending.  And it is here that relatively little coverage is focused.  How many Americans understand how federal spending works or even what we spen those trillions of dollars on each year?  It is a complicated subject, but it is also one that can be made quite simple if need be.  Now is the time to pay attention to the real problem that we face.  To use the favorite cliche of the moment:  it is time to have a national conversation about overspending.
