Maybe This is Why Obama Chose Hagel

Much has been said about the attitude of president Obama's nominee for Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, towards Israel and Jews.  The accusations of anti-semitism have been flying fed by Hagel's prior statements and actions.  One can only imagine the hysteria in the press had a Republican nominated an old white man to the cabinet when the nominee had made anti-semitic and anti-Israel statements (as well as slurring gays as well to boot).  With Hagel, however, Obama seems to be getting a pass on all of this.

Yesterday, the New York Times published an article that may actually (albeit unintentionally) explain the reasoning of the Obama choice.  Here is the first paragraph of the article about the president of Egypt:

Nearly three years ago, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood delivered a speech urging Egyptians to “nurse our children and our grandchildren on hatred” for Jews and Zionists. In a television interview around that time, the same leader described Zionists as “these bloodsuckers who attack the Palestinians, these warmongers, the descendants of apes and pigs.”

The man referenced in the article is, of course, Mohamed Morsi, the current president of Egypt.  Maybe Obama chose Hagel because he knew that he could use Hagel to act as an envoy to Morsi.  After all they seem to share the same views about many subjects.
