Who Cares Anyway?

In the high point or the low point of today's testimony by Secretary of State Clinton about the attack on the Benghazi embassy that left four Americans dead (including our ambassador to Libya), Senator Johnson asked Clinton about why she and the rest of the administration persisted for weeks in saying that the attack was caused by a youtube video when that was not true.  Indeed, we know that the CIA and White House had real time video of the scene that made clear that there had been no demonstration about the youtube video at all.

Here is Clinton's response as reported by the AP:

“With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because of a protest? Or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided they’d go kill some Americans? What difference, at this point, does it make” Clinton scolded Johnson, raising her voice. “It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, Senator.”

Got that?  Clinton says just two things:  first, that it makes no difference what the reason for the attack was, and second, that it is her job "to figure out what happened".  Clinton is saying two contradictory things in the space of two sentences.  And to make matters worse, Clinton said all of this in an angry manner.  As the AP put it, "Clinton Slams Criticism".

The truth is, however, that even if one pretends to be angry, it does not change nonsense into something that makes sense.  Clinton cannot tell America that it makes no difference why  the embassy was attacked and then claim to have the task of finding out what happened.  Senator Johnson had the nerve to ask perhaps the most relevant question of the hearing; boiling it down, that question seeks a reason why Clinton and Obama decided to lie to the American people about what had happened.  Clinton just did not have it in her to tell the truth in response.  She went with the phony emotional of attacking the questioner for having the nerve to ask her for the truth.

There are many who believe that Clinton still plans to run for president in 2016.  If she actually harbors such plans, she made a big mistake today.  There are thousands of people who will never trust her again.  I realize that most of those people did not trust her already, but today's antics were of a different character than Clinton's past transgressions.  She had the opportunity to clear up why she lied to America and she consciously chose not to do so.
