Do They See The Irony?

Nicholas Kristof is a columnist at the New York Times who provides both a clear view at the soul of Progressivism as well as a large dose of unintentional humor.  His latest column is no exception.  Kristof writes about China and its new leadership.  He claims that Xi Jinping "will spearhead a resurgence of economic reform, and probably some political easing as well."  Among the many reasons for that view Kristof points out that Xi send his child to Harvard and "admires" American education.  Really?  Why is that?  Probably because American education is now more effective at indoctrinating student with leftist dogma than Chinese universities.  Oh, here's another reason:  Xi's mother lives in Guangdong province, supposedly the most capitalist of the Chinese provinces.  I'm not making this up.  Kristof really wrote this and the Times published it.

What Kristof is really saying is that he, like his cohort Tom Friedman, admires China and wishes the USA were more like the PRC.  Unbelievable!

But, the real reason I am writing about Kristof is not his distorted views, but rather because of the hilarious irony in his pieces.  The current column lambastes Hu Jintao, the current Chinese leader.  Hu, Kristof tells us, has been a major failure.  Here is one of the biggest blasts that Kristof shoots at Hu:

President Hu, who always reads speeches from texts, is a robot who surrounds himself with robots.

I believe that Kristof and the folks at the Times do not see the humor in this.  Let me put it this way:  what prominent world leader is known for reading his speeches?  The answer is not Hu Jintao, but president Obama.  Obama is a creature of the teleprompter.  Everything he says is scripted.  Even events like meeting winning sports teams at the White House have remarks that come right off the teleprompter.  Obama and his team know that his biggest mistakes come on those rare occasions when he speaks in his own words rather than using the ones that the speechwriters put together for him.  So Kristof condemns the Chinese president as a robot for reading his speeches while being close to orgasmic over the Obama speeches delivered in the same manner.  I know it is a cliche to say this, but you simply cannot make this stuff up.  The truth is that I was waiting for Kristof to condemn president Hu for overspending, lying or just playing too much golf.  I guess he is saving that for his next column.
