Yesterday, I posted this quote from a famous speech:
Americans "have never relinquished our skepticism of central authority, nor have we succumbed to the fiction that all society’s ills can be cured through government alone. Our celebration of initiative and enterprise; our insistence on hard work and personal responsibility, are constants in our character."
Now, I will identify the speaker. I assume that most of you realize that the quote comes directly from yesterday's innaugural address by president Obama. That speech was truly an amazing piece of work. First of all, there was Obama announcing that America is skeptical of government and celebrates initiative and enterprise. Obama actually said that, I kid you not. This is the same Obama who thinks that government is the answer to every question other than "What is wrong with America?" This is the same Obama who has demonized success for the last four years; all we have heard is how those who are truly successful do not do their fair share. So Obama was out there telling the world just another one of his whoppers.
Even more amazing, however, is what Obama did not talk about. We heard about climate change. We heard about gay rights. We heard about immigration. But there was nothing about economic growth. There was nothing about creating new jobs aside from a few words about the need to improve education (which some would argue is job creation in the long run.)
What is the pricipal problem that faces America today? In poll after poll, the answer of the American people is the economy and jobs. The next highest level of support goes to the budget deficit and spending or taxes. This is really another manifestation of the first issue.
Third place generally goes to dealing with terrorism and foreign threats. The items about which Obama spoke are way down on the list.
So we had a speech yesterday from Obama that avoided the big issues facing the country. On top of that, we had the usual lies coming from the president. It's going to be a long four years. Excuse me, let me not make it worse than it really is. It's going to be a long three years and 363 days.
