Crazy But True

Current TV is a cable network that was founded by Al Gore.  For a while it was the home of Keith Olbermann.  Now, its biggest "stars" are disgraced former NY governor Elliot Spitzer aka "client 9" and another former governor Jennifer Granholm of Michigan.  On a good night, they draw 20,000 viewers according to the ratings.  Gore pitched this network as a progressive news source.  More accurately, it was the place where disgraced or unglued lefties go to die.  For quite a while, it was known that the place was on the block to be sold.

One bidder who seriously considered buying Current TV was Glenn Beck's company, The Blaze.  That bid was rejected unceremoniously by Current TV.  According to The Atlantic, Beck was told the following:

The legacy of who the network goes to is important to us and we are sensitive to networks not aligned with our point of view

So today, Current TV announced that it had been sold for $500 million to guess who ..... al Jezeera!!!  I kid you not.  Al Jazeera!!!!

So the favorite network of al Qaeda is "align with" the progressive point of view!  Really?  It is a insightful comment on the state of progressivism in the USA that al Jazeera is aligned to their point of view, but the Americans at The Blaze are not.

On another front, it is also quite funny that al Jazeera is buying a network at a cost of about $25,000 per prime time viewer.  To put that in context, that would make the Fox News Channel worth something like $60 billion.  Even funnier is the fact that upon hearing of the al Jazeera deal, Time Warner Cable, the second largest cable company in the USA dropped Current TV from its systems.  That move probably cost Current TV a big chunk of its audience.  I guess if the Saudis can overcharge us for oil, we can sell them a dying cable network with a non existant audience.
