The negotiations about the fiscal cliff have come to the point where they have done something nearly impossible: they have made Joe Biden look good. The truth is that president Obama is just not able to negotiate a deal. In his mind, people either agree with him or they are wrong, perhaps evil. He never misses an opportunity to insult those on the other side, and he constantly changes what he asks for. Obama negotiates to NOT make a deal, rather than to make one. Then their is Harry Reid. He too was the Democrat point man for a while. Reid, however, is always worried about not getting exposed to any criticism from his own side. If his choice is no criticism or making a deal, Reid opts for the former. That brings us to Biden. The vice president suddenly gets to look good because he was able to negotiate in good faith with Mitch McConnell. That is a pretty low standard for success, but that is what it is.
I did get a chuckle this morning when I read a column exclaiming that Biden was now the most influential vice president ever. Really? According to the column, Biden is responsible for our current policy in Afghanistan. So he gets credit for that failure? And it was Biden, according to the column, who gets credit for the auto bailout. Amazing that the news leaked out only four years later. The truth is that Biden is trying to position himself to run for president in 2016. I hope he does. Of all the Democrats, he would probably be the easiest one to beat (assuming Anthony Weiner does not try for a come back.)
