Not the Economy, Not the Budget, Not National Security

George Stephanopoulos is about as plugged into Democrat politics as a reporter could be.  As a result, his view of the main goals for president Obama's second term carry a lot of weight.  So yesterday, Stephanopoulos wrote a column in which he describes Obama's three big goals as being gun control, gay rights and immigration reform.  I am not kidding.  After a campaign that focused on little, Obama has chosen three issues that the polls say most people do not care about.  Gun control has moved to the front of the media barrage, but other than a few, most folks do not put the issue in their top five.  Gay rights is a big deal to the gay community for sure, but again, this is not a mainstream issue.  Immigration reform carries great weight as an issue in the Hispanic community, but even among Hispanics the economy and jobs is viewed as much more significant by the majority.

So how can it be that Obama is going to focus on these little issues?  Is he and his administration so bereft of new ideas to help the economy that they will just ignore it?  Will the ongoing and increasing threat from Islamic terror groups just be pushed to the side?  Will the next Secretary of State be telling us in a year that there may have been some successful attacks by the terrorists, but (as Hillary Clinton said yesterday) what difference does it make?

The crazy thing is that Obama and those around him truly believe that they are going for the most important issues.  They really think that gun control is what must be addressed.  They really think that gay rights need a major push by the federal government.  They truly believe that they can achieve some sort of immigration reform.

I believe that this is a major mistake by Obama and the Obamacrats.  In 2014, there will need to be an economic recovery in full swing or the Democrats will suffer.  Sure, the Republicans have to play their cards correctly between now and then in order to benefit, but that is not very difficult to do  if Obama fails to focus on the economy.  Indeed, it is amazing to me that the president could be so misguided in his view of what is important to the country.
