In an unintentionally funny interview on Sunday, Charles Schumer the Democrat senator from New York said that if the GOP wants the senate to pass a budget, the senate will do so. Schumer threatened, however, that the budget will include tax increases and that the GOP better get used to that idea. It was hysterical.
First, the Democrat controlled senate has failed to pass a budget for three years. They do not have to pass a budget to meet GOP demands; it is required by law. That's right, federal law requires that Congress pass a budget each year. For the last three years, the House has passed a budget and the Democrat senate has failed to act. Now, Schumer is actually "threatening" that the Democrats will comply with the law.
Second, the reason that the Democrat senate has not passed a budget is that they do not want to admit how high they want spending to be. It will be interesting to see what passes now. Schumer may want to change the subject to taxes, but the point is that the budget will include revenue sources and spending levels. The Democrats will no longer be able to masquerade as budget hawks once they pass a plan to spend huge new sums of money.
Also on Sunday, the White House criticized the three month increase in the debt ceiling being offered by House Republicans. Again, amazing! What's next? Will Obama threaten to veto the very debt ceiling increase he keeps telling us all is necessary?
