The city of Denver is considering an ordinance regarding illegal aliens that would protect them from being arrested if they go to court but do not have proper immigration credentials. In other words, the city is planning to protect illegal aliens who appear in court from arrest over their status as illegals.
That sounds nice to illegals; no one could doubt that. There is, however, a problem with that ordinance. The city cannot stop the federal government from arresting illegals in courtrooms or anywhere else. ICE has the right under federal law to make such arrests, and a city (even Denver) cannot legally limit that right no matter what it does. All the city can do is to say that Denver police and officials will not question immigration status inside a courthouse. That might provide some protection, but since Denver police already do little, if anything, to enforce immigration laws, the resulting protection is minor indeed.
This is just another of those minor propaganda pieces that get pushed by the liberal Democrats to make it appear as if they are doing something for illegals when they really are not.
