In a new piece in The Week, a purported "expert" writes of the fear that new National Security Adviser John Bolton will sabotage the upcoming talks with North Korea in order to start a war between the USA and the North Koreans. According to this article, Bolton doesn't care about casualties and only wants to totally destroy North Korea.
I am purposefully not linking to the article or even mentioning the name of the author because there should be no more people added to the list of those who have read this garbage. I only mention the article because it is a good example of the sort of delusional lies that the left spews on every subject -- this time about Korea.
Let's back up for a moment. North Korea and American relations with that country have been a problem for the USA for at least 20 years. Under Bill Clinton, the USA agreed to give major aid to the NKs in exchange for an unverifiable promise by the NKs to stop seeking nuclear weapons. That agreement turned out to be bogus. North Korea went forward with its nuclear program and did so while getting aid from the USA. Under Bush, the USA reopened negotiations, but never got any meaningful participation by the NKs. President Obama did nothing when it came to North Korea. Basically, Obama just hid every time North Korea was mentioned, but he gave that policy a name, "strategic patience" so that he could try to make it appear as if he knew what he was doing about the crazies in Pyongyang. Then came president Trump. The "experts" like the one who wrote this latest article derided Trump as an amateur. These experts told us that President Trump was too inexperience, too dumb, too unsophisticated or too something else to get anything correct in dealing with the NKs. When Trump built up US forces near North Korea, the experts called him a crazy war monger. When Trump returned the insults from Kim Jung Un with his own retorts (like Little Rocket Man), the experts screamed that Trump was trying to start World War III. At every turn, these experts have told us that whatever President Trump was doing at that moment was absolutely the wrong thing to do. Then, Kim Jung Un asked for a summit with the President and he agreed. The experts derided the President for agreeing; it was, they told us, a major mistake. Now that summit is going ahead and Kim has said that he will agree to denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. As a result, the same morons, excuse me, experts who told us that a summit was a bad idea now accuse the White House of trying to destroy the summit. Can't they get their story straight?
The real point here is this: according to reports, Kim wants a deal under which (1) North Korea denuclearizes as does South Korea, (2) a peace treaty is signed ending the Korean War, and (3) the USA agrees not to invade North Korea. If these reports are correct (and who knows if that is the case) then it will be a no-brainer for a deal to follow along those lines. I seriously doubt that President Trump cares if Kim stays in power in North Korea so long as the nukes are removed from the equation. Peace between North and South Korea would almost certainly lead to some sort of opening along the border that would force a liberalization in the North. It would be a great result for the USA, South Korea, Japan and the entire world.
Put another way, unless one believes that John Bolton is insane, there is no way that the charges thrown out against him in The Week could possibly be true. Still, The Week is out there pushing delusional lies from the left. Isn't it enough already?
UPDATE: As I posted this, I learned of reports that Kim Jung Un had ordered the release of the three Americans held as captive in North Korea. This is meant as a show of good faith ahead of the summit meeting with President Trump. It is a wonderful thing to have happen. No doubt, The Week will run an article about how John Bolton wants to have these three folks shot in order to derail the summit and start a war.
