This Week in Gaza

It's Friday.  That means that it's time for the weekly protest/riot by Hamas and its supporters in the Gaza Strip.  Today, about 5-7 thousand people came to the Gaza border with Israel.  That's way down from the 40 thousand who came to the first event about a month ago.  Nevertheless, the rioters set aloft burning kites to try to incinerate nearby Israeli fields.  They also used slingshots to try to shoot down Israeli drones that were sent in to bring down the kites.  More important, the rioters still tried to tear down the border wall.  Ultimately, however, the rioters were able to get into the border crossing between Israel and Gaza in the southern portion of Gaza; before being forced back, the rioters damaged or destroyed two pipelines that carry fuel and water into Gaza from Israel.  Think about that for a minute; the damage done by the Gaza rioters will reduce fuel and water supplies to the people of Gaza until repairs are made to these pipeline (assuming that they will be repaired.)

Hamas seems to be a bizarre death cult.  If the media is to be believed, the riots are to protest the suffering of the people in Gaza, but in order to so protest, the rioters inflict much more suffering on those same people.  What's next?  Will those who are wounded in these riots shoot themselves in the legs in order to protest what happened?  Will the ultimate protest by Hamas be mass suicide?

The real problem is that in ten days we will come to the final day of these protests.  On May 15, Hamas plans to have the biggest riot of all.  If Hamas is not careful, there will also be massive casualties.  Actually, the truth seems to be that Hamas wants mass casualties so that the images can be used against the Israelis.

The problem for Hamas, though, is that the riots may be things that appear on TV screens in certain parts of the world, and one of those regions is inside Israel.  No matter what the casual viewer in Sweden thinks of the riots, the people in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem see them as an existential threat to the state of Israel.  In other words, Hamas is uniting Israel by its conduct.
