Are the Obamacrats getting Desperate -- or are they just nasty?

What do you know about Ann Romney? Think about it. Do you see Mrs. Romney sitting around scheming about political ploys that can help her husband win the White House? Is she a phony who runs to claim victimhood in order to thwart honest attacks on her husband's policies? Or, is Mrs. Romney a person to be emulated, a survivor of the vicious assault of Multiple Sclerosis and breast cancer. Is she a woman who has shown bravery in her struggles with disease, a woman who marches forward even when confronted with rather daunting personal circumstances? Did Ann Romney work hard to raise her five sons, particularly in the early years when she and her husband were penniless students? Is Mrs. Romney cheerful and caring about others, or is she a phony who just claims to care?

These questions are actually serious issues in the ongoing presidential campaign. The Obama campaign and its lackeys in the main stream media have decided that it is time to take on Ann Romney. They are trying to attack her in order to bring down her usefulness as an asset for her husband's campaign. It is a stupid move. Mrs. Romney is far more popular than Obama and also than Mitt Romney. She has a sunny personality. She appears to be open to people and caring about their travails. In short, she is a perfect presidential spouse; she is a plus with essentially no negatives. Those who attack her look mean spirited and nasty. The attackers seem condescending to the millions of women like Ann Romney who have toiled for years in the home. Indeed, the attackers come across as folks who care very little about a woman's right to chose her own lifestyle. The only choice they seem to support is one for abortion. But women have many other parts to their lives; they, like all people, deserve the right to make choices about their entire lives.

In the last month we have seen Hilary Rosen tell the world that Ann Romney never worked a day in her life. This was both wrong and stupid, but the brouhaha blew over. Now we have another prominent Obamacrat woman, Michelle Goldberg, who compared Ann Romney's op-ed piece in USA Today about the joys and glories of being a mother to propaganda from Nazi's or Soviet Communists. That's right, it was not enough to say Romney never worked, now Team Obama has put out the word that Mrs. Romney is a closet Nazi or Communist. Since the statement was made on MSNBC, hardly anyone saw it, but it was put out there nonetheless. Indeed, the Obama campaign ratcheted the rhetoric up rather than down when the storm broke in response to the attack. Goldberg announced an "apology" in the Daily Beast in a way that confirms both the desperation and nastiness of the Obamacrats. Here is the essence of her supposed apology: "I’m truly sorry to have given the right a pretext for another tedious spasm of feigned outrage. I’m especially sorry if I’ve done anything to strengthen the conservative myth that liberals disdain motherhood." Goldberg also tells us that Ann Romney is just a "calculating political wife".

It is actually funny to watch what is going on. Ann Romney writes a non-controversial piece in USA Today for Mothers' Day in which she sings the praises of being a mother. No one in his right mind could take offense at Romney's statements. Indeed, for many years, many folks have described positions as "mothers' day statements", meaning that what was said was as uncontroversial as a paean to mothers on Mothers' Day. The brain trust over at the Obama campaign decided in response to call Mrs. Romney a Nazi and a Communist. Truly desperate. Truly stupid. Truly nasty.

The highlight for me of the "apology" from Goldberg is her accusation that Mrs. Romney is trying to play the victim here. Really? The left spends its entire energy trying to define just who are the victims in our society. They do not care about improving society, just finding victims of America and "helping" them with some government program or another. Playing the victim is the move of the left, not of conservatives. As a result, it is amazing to hear Goldberg project onto Romney the actions of the left. But think about it. What has Romney done that claims "victimhood"? Let's see. She survived a serious bout with Multiple Sclerosis and breast cancer. Have you ever heard Mrs. Romney talk about her illness or complain about how it affected her? I pay a lot of attention to political news, but I have never seen Ann Romney talk about the disease except in response to a direct question and then only briefly. No victim there. Well maybe Ann Romney has been talking about how she was attacked by Hilary Rosen. No, her response was that she had a different opinion than Rosen. No victimhood there. Indeed, Ann Romney has not even taken offense to being called a Nazi or a Communist by Goldberg. Romney just laughed it off. The truth is that Ann Romney is not a victim; she is a role model.

I am sure that in her insular world Michelle Goldberg has become a hero. Imagine! Here is the woman who told the world that Mrs. Romney was really a Nazi! That'll fix those evil Republicans! Fortunately for us all, Goldberg's world is pretty small. The rest of us recognize the attack for just what it actually is, a nasty desperate move by team Obama.
