Last week in his speech from Afghanistan, president Obama said that the "tide had turned" and that America had broken the Taliban's momentum. That was the reason that Obama gave for being able to pull out American troops from that conflict. Today on CNN, the leaders of the Senate and House Intelligence committees said that they disagree. Before you quickly chalk that disagreement up to partisan politics, remember that the Senate chairman is Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat from California. According to the senator, both she and the House chairman, Republican Mike Rogers of Michigan have found that "the Taliban is stronger." Feinstein and Rogers were recently in Afghanistan for longer than Obama's whirlwind visit. They had the chance to meet with all sorts of local leaders including Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president. Their conclusion was disquieting to say the least.
For the last year or so, I have been writing about how Obama has lied repeatedly regarding domestic matters. Obama's inability to tell the truth is a major problem, but if that problem also pertains to matters like the war in Afghanistan, then the problem rises to a whole new level. I do not know if the Taliban is a broken shell as Obama would have us believe or if it is strong than ever as the bipartisan congressional leadership indicates. I do know, however, that the American people deserve to have the president tell us the truth. It is a terrible thing that we have to wonder what is really going on in Afghanistan. Is Obama just lying in order to bring the troops home? It may be time to get out of Afghanistan in any event, but we need to understand the truth and make this important move with our eyes open.
Obama has really got to go!
