The Israeli Government Shuffle -- What does it mean?

Today brings the news that the expected early elections in Israel have been cancelled. Instead, the Kadima party has joined the government thereby giving prime minister Netanyahu a huge majority in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. Much of the change is the result of Israeli politics and the requirments for a new law governing service by the ultra-religious in Israel. There is, however, also a big impact which may be ahead on Israeli policy regarding Iran.

The new leader of Kadima, Shaul Mofaz was actually born in Teheran. He has a history of involvement over the years with the Israeli defense establishment. And, until now, Mofaz has been opposed to unilateral Israeli action regarding the Iranian nuclear program. So what is up with this change? Is the prime minister bringing his opponent on this issue into the government in order to box him in to supporting an Israeli attack? Does Netanyahu think that by disclosing all the intelligence data to Mofaz he will be able to convine Mofaz to change his position? Has Netanyahu decided that it would be a mistake for Israel to attack Iran? There is no way of knowing at this point. We will have to wait and see.
