About fifteen minutes ago, I watched a small bit of the interview by Rachel Maddow of Connecticut Democrat senator Dick Blumenthal. It was a rare moment of clarity from my home state senator. He told Maddow that today's unexpected meeting between Speaker Ryan, FBI director Wray, and Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein was part of an effort to subvert the progress of the investigation into collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. Maddow got excited by that and commented that no one seems to know what happened in that meeting. She asked Blumenthal if he knew what had transpired in the meeting; Maddow was clearly hoping to get a scoop in reporting that news. Blumenthal's response was that he had absolutely no idea what had happened in the meeting.
Think about that. Blumenthal is a sitting US senator. He charges that a particular meeting is part of an effort to subvert an investigation, but immediately admits that he has absolutely no knowledge about what was discussed in that very meeting. That means that Blumenthal's charge about subverting the investigation is just another lie by Blumenthal. It seems as if Blumenthal either does not care about telling the truth, or he has gotten so enmeshed in conspiracy theories that he can't help himself.
Amazingly, I then looked at Twitter and saw that Blumenthal had said that the appointment by the President of a new US Attorney in the Southern District of NY -- especially without Congressional approval -- was outrageous and an obstruction of justice. Of course, the problem with that statement is that the appointment of the new US Attorney is subject to confirmation by the Senate. And Dick Blumenthal knows that; he's voted on over 100 confirmations of various US attorneys. Dick Blumenthal also knows that all US attorneys are appointed by the president. Such an appointment is hardly outrageous or obstruction of justice. The statement was just another lie by Blumenthal.
I often find Blumenthal's statements to be less than honest. Remember, Blumenthal is the same guy who for years lied about having served in combat in Vietnam. Today's lies, however, were so blatant and so clearly intentional, that it may well be that Blumenthal is a pathological liar. Perhaps he cannot help himself.
