Republican David Yancey won the last remaining unsettled race in the Virginia legislature's lower house, a victory which gives the GOP a 51 to 49 margin over the Democrats in that chamber. When election day ended last November the results were extremely close. There was a mandatory recount that originally gave the Democrat a one vote victory, but when the Virginia Supreme Court reviewed the results, those results changed as certain votes disputed by one side or another were either counted or discarded. The final vote tally was a tie. Under Virginia law, the election was then to be decided by a blind drawing which was held this morning. Yancey's name was pulled from the pot and he is now the official winner of the election.
It seems hard to imagine that a drawing would decide which party controls a Virginia legislative house, but that's the law. Amazing!
