The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, got into office mainly on his last name. Andy's father, Mario Cuomo, was a long time NY governor until the people finally got fed up and voted him out. Andy has been trading on the family name since then. He surely didn't get his present position based upon intelligence.
I was reminded of this fact yesterday when Cuomo delivered his state of the state speech. Andy announced that the new tax law is "economic warfare" between red and blue states. He went on to say that New York will sue to block implementation of the new law.
Think about that. Cuomo doesn't like the fact that under the new tax law, those ultra high taxes in New York will no longer be fully deductible on federal returns. The Democrats in Albany who impose these crazy taxes will now have constituents who have to pay the full amount with no subsidy from the rest of the country. That doesn't make the law unconstitutional, however. Congress gets to pass income tax laws that treat everyone equally. The new law does just that. Everyone across America can deduct local and state taxes but only up to $10,000 per year. New York is filled with lawyers. Believe me, I know. I practiced law there for a long time. There are more lawyers concentrated in Manhattan than anywhere else on the planet. Surely, one of these lawyers must have told Andy that a lawsuit against the federal government on the tax law would just fail and that Andy would look foolish for bringing it. Oh well, that must have been too complicated for Andy to understand.
