The Essence of Progressivism

Writing in The Week, Ryan Cooper makes clear the real view progressives hold of the USA.  His supposed subject is the protest movement in Iran and why America should just stay silent on the sidelines.  Cooper says that support for the protesters would just be an excuse for the USA to go to war against Iran.  That's complete nonsense, but it's not the main point of the Cooper's progressive screed.  His main point is that the USA has no right to "meddle" in Iran because we are no better than the Iranians.  Here's how he puts it:

But America needs to mind its own business. For one thing, it's long since time that Americans of any political stripe ditch the traditional hysterical chauvinism that often characterizes our statements about the rest of the world. One unstated premise behind Iran hawks' lectures about spreading freedom and such is that the United States is some unique bastion of democratic liberties.
It isn't. The United States is not a "city on a hill," it's not the greatest country on the planet, and it's not the only place where people can rise from humble origins. America is merely a very large and rich country with a hypertrophied military and a severe case of plutocratic inequality.

Cooper goes on to castigate America and its structures as antiquated and unfair.  We are not worthy of criticizing anyone else, or so he says.

People need to keep this view in mind always when hearing the next appeal by progressives for the right to govern.
