Arianna Huffington is the creator of the Huffington Post. She was asked about the campaign ads that Obama is running to take credit for the bin Laden killing one year ago. Here is how the London Daily Mail described her response:
Mr Obama has faced criticism even from allies about his decision to make a campaign ad about the bin Laden raid. Arianna Huffington, an outspoken liberal who runs the left-leaning Huffington Post website, roundly condemned it.
She told CBS: ‘We should celebrate the fact that they did such a great job. It's one thing to have an NBC special from the Situation Room... all that to me is perfectly legitimate, but to turn it into a campaign ad is one of the most despicable things you can do.’
I have to say that I agree. The death of bin Laden was a national victory. I know of no politicians, other than Joe Biden and Ron Paul, who have said they were against it. I am sure there were others, but it is ridiculous to claim, as Obama does, that he made a gutsy call. He made an American call. He made a realistic call. He did what his job required.
In the Washington Post, Dana Millbank, another liberal columnist, said today that Obama's permanent campaign is making him queasy and Obama look sleazy. Even Navy seals are complainng about Obama's claiming all the credit for the bin Laden raid. After all, it was seal team six that put its lives on the line, not Obama. Had the raid failed, Obama might have had to explain it to the public, but the seals would have been dead. They deserve the praise, not Obama.
Let me be clear. Obama made the right call with regard to bin Laden. He does deserve credit for giving the order to go ahead with the raid. But it was a total no brainer. As Romney said yesterday, "Even Jimmy Carter would have given the order."
