It's time to congratulate senator Ted Cruz for saying what needed to be said and for doing the right thing. Cruz announced that he is going to vote against fast track authority for trade negotiations when the measure comes to the floor of the senate. It's clearly the correct choice. There's just no way that Congress ought to trust president Obama to finalize a beneficial trade deal when we now have proof that he has lied to Congress about the contents of the nearly completed treaties. Prior to the first time that this matter came before the senate, the administration assured the senators that nothing in the trade deals would affect American immigration laws. Since then, that assurance has been revealed to be a lie; it took publication by Wikileaks of a section of the TISA pact to show this. Obama negotiated a deal in which an international panel would be able to supervise and stop the enforcement of American laws.
There is no way Congress should give more power to a president who simply cannot be trusted.
My suggestion for a compromise is that Congress postpone the vote on granting fast track authority until after the next president is sworn in.
Once again, kudos to Ted Cruz for recognizing the truth and telling the nation about it.
