Did you hear the big news? Congress is going to consider gun control again. At least that is what the mainstream media is telling us. Even Drudge has a big headline announcing the move. The real question, however, is why bother.
The guy who shot up the churchgoers in South Carolina got his gun legally. None of the proposed gun control measures of the last ten years would have prevented his acquisition of the gun he used. Nothing short of banning gun private ownership (which is clearly unconstitutional) would have made any difference. Place like Chicago which have among the strictest gun laws in the nation also have the highest levels of gun violence. In short, the current gun laws don't work and the ones proposed as additional measures won't make any difference.
The truth is that what cuts gun violence in general is strong police efforts. In New York, there was a program called Stop and Frisk in which officers were allowed to stop people when they had a reasonable suspicion that they might be up to no good and to frisk them. New York's liberal mayor Bill DiBlasio stopped the program because it was "racist". As a result, murders and gun violence in New York are up about 30% from the period right before the program was stopped. The large majority of those who have been killed since the program was stopped were African Americans. Isn't it great that the families of these dead victims can know that even if their loved ones are dead, the suspicious looking guys on the street no longer have to be afraid of having their illegal guns discovered during a stop and frisk. Instead, the thugs can use the guns on other people. And we can all congratulate ourselves that we're not "racist" even if another hundred people have to die for that.
