The chairman of the Democrat National Committee announced today that Fox News would not be allowed to host any of the debates to be held by the Democrat presidential candidates in 2020. According to Tom Perez, this is because of an article last week that said that FNC was in a cozy relationship with the White House. That's actually what this genius Perez said.
The decision by the DNC is a rather idiotic one. Fox has a much bigger audience than the other cable news channels, and the DNC is giving a batch of free media with that audience. It's not a wise move. Also, anyone who watches Fox News knows that the network doesn't hesitate to take on the Trump administration or the President on a regular basis. The problem from the Democrat perspective, though, is that Fox actually takes on the Democrats as well, and they can't have that.
I suggest that Fox respond to the DNC in kind. First, it should ban any appearance by the chair of the DNC or any of the vice chairs on the network. No one would miss these people, that is for certain. In addition, Fox should invite individual Democrat candidates on to shows like Special Report (the main Fox evening news show) for an in depth interview. Unless and until a candidate agrees to appear, there should be a blackout of coverage of that candidate across Fox News and Fox Business. As the primaries get closer, Fox News ought to hold joint interviews of three or four candidates. These 20 minute mini-debates would not be officially sanctioned by the DNC, but I don't think that the candidates invited to participate would turn down the free media.
