Syrian update

According to the latest reports, the European Union is preparing a new set of sanctions to be imposed upon Syria for its continued slaughter of protesters in that country. The total number of dead is well past 1,000 and continues to climb. In recent days, the Assad government in Syria has tried to take attention off of its targeted killings of the protesters by creating "spontaneous" protests at the Syrian Israeli border. The Syrian regime has bussed in hundreds of people who each received about $1000 to participate. These "spontaneous" protesters attempt to force their way across the border between Syria and Israel. This has led to folks being killed by land mines. The protesters have also attacked the Israeli troops guarding the border which led to counterfire that has wounded some and killed others. The hope in Dmascus is that both the world and the Syrian public will focus on the border mayhem rather than on the assassinations and murders of unarmed protesters in Syrian cities.

The EU sanctions are the third attempt by that group to exact a price from the Syrian regime for its conduct. The new sanctions are much wider in focus than the earlier ones. This group will affect all Syrian companies doing business with the EU.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration does nothing to stop the Syrian slaughter. After Obama told us that the USA had to act in Libya since Gaddafi was killing his own people, his reaction to the Syrian killings has been, at best, muted and, in truth, almost non-existent. The only step taken so far by the US has been to freeze the assets held by Assad in the USA. Since Assad has no assets here, the freeze was just for public consumption. Obama is just too busy raising money for his re-election campaign to pay attention to his duties as president.

Obama has got to go!
