Take Chris Matthews off the air

I have to confess again that I cannot listen to Chris Matthews for very long; my limit is usually something in the area of 30 seconds. It is his manner of speaking, or more accurately shouting at his guests that drives me up the wall. He has to be at least one of the rudest people on TV. As a result, I rarely hear what he says. In that regard, I am like essentially every other American. Matthews ratings are anemic even for MSNBC, and that is certainly saying something.

In any event, I happened this afternoon to see a snippet of what Matthews said the other night in connection with Weinergate. Amazingly, he said that it was culturally backward Christians who were upset by Weiner's conduct and wanted him to resign. How to describe that remark? Smug? No, that is not enought. Idiotic? No, that doesn't give enough emphasis that these are Matthews' true beliefs. Distorted? Well that certainly applies, but again it is insufficient. In my opinion, I think the best description of the remark is "sufficient cause to fire the guy".

Who is Chris Matthews to call those who oppose random sexting by a US Congressman to women of unknown ages that he met while trolling the internet "culturally backward"? Is it culturally forward to send pictures of body parts to anonymous women on the net? Who knows? Maybe Matthews thinks that elite universities should open departments of "sexting studies". Indeed, Matthews can be an assistant professor of internet porn. Would Matthews feel different if Weiner had sent X rated pictures to Matthews own daughter? I hope so, but I doubt it.

MSNBC should dump this guy. Now that Comcast is in charge, it should require some standards to be used on its programming.
