Since my last post about Anthony Weiner, I have been thinking about his conduct over the last ten days. Simply put, Weiner has been behaving in an irraitonal manner. Forget for the moment (like you could) that the guy was sending semi-nude and nude pictures of himself to young women. That is bad enough, but he probably told himself that he would not get caught. Once the first photo hit the web, however, Weiner of all people had to know that the story would bring him down. The first picture was not the only one out there. In fact, there are apparently many others, three of which were posted on the Breitbart site today. Weiner should just have resigned if he cared at all about his wife. Why put her through all of this only to get to the inevitable end of total disgrace. Weiner is, at best, a laughing stock. Or should I say: Look how the mighty have fallen. Any rational observer who knew that all these other pictures were out there would know also that Weiner's downfall was inevitable.
What troubles me most, however, is the question of why America ends up with people like this in government. Couldn't his constituents see Weiner for who he really is? It is like the question as to why Charlie Rangel got re-elected after he was disclosed to be a tax cheat. Or why do we have a treasury secretary who cheated on his taxes? Of how about Congressman Lee who also sent partially clad pictures of himself to women on craigs list. and, of course, the biggest of them all: how did we get a president who thought it was ok to have sex in the oval office with an intern? I guess it is nothing new. Look back at the Kennedy years in the White House for a period when Clinton's antics looked positively tame.
The truth is that we are lucky that Weiner clicked on the wrong button. Just image if he had been elected mayor of New York. What would he have done? Maybe he would have a redevelopment plan to turn Times Square back into a porn zone filled with hookers. I guess we will never know. Fortunately!!
