Politico is reporting that the Obama Justice Department has gone ahead with a grand jury investigation into possible "war crimes" committed by US forces at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Apparently the centerpiece of the investigation is the death of one prisoner, al-Jamadi, many years ago. There already was a military trial for what was characterized as the homicide of that prisoner, and the defendant was acquited.
It is disgusting that the Justice Department feels it necessary to once again stir things up in a way that makes the USA and its armed forces look bad. According to Obama and the Obamacrats, Guantanamo was a great recruiting tool for Al Qaeda. If that is true, just imagine how this investigation will help Al Qaeda. At Guantanamo, the prisoners are well treated, have full religious liberty and there is no reason to claim maltreatment of them. If there was a murder at Abu Ghraib that was a war crime, it would give al Qaeda a lot to say. So why the investigation now?
Had there never been a prior investigation and trial, then one could argue that justice requires action now. but there was a trial and a not-guilty verdict. Are we going to try the same man for the alleged crime a second time? Is there someone else? How stupid are these people in DOJ?
Alternatively, we have to question if this is just a way for Obama to appeal to his base who he needs to win re-election. There are many folks out there who are angry at Obama for not pulling all US forces out of the various wars. Maybe Obama thinks that by "investigating" the military for war crimes he can win back the loyalty of these folks. Do not care about what harm the investigation does to the USA! NO, after all, Obama's re-election could be helped!
