Yesterday, I wrote about the dispute concerning continuing authorization for the FAA. The Republicans in the House had passed a long term bill which the Senate had held up. Then the Republicans in the Houe passed a short term bill to keep the FAA operating. Again, the Senate Democrats had held it up because the House did removed federal subsidies for twelve rural airports from the bill. These subsidies which ran as high as three thousand dollars per passenger trip were deemed too expensive by the House. Of course, this makes perfect sense. If a ticket that covered all costs for a trip from one of these airports would cost $2000, why should the taxpayer pay $1850 and leave the traveler only paying $150?
In any event, the Senate Democrats yesterday held aa lengthy news conference in which they accused the House GOP once again of being terrorists who had taken America hostage. They demanded that the House pass a bill that left the subsidies intact.
Today, the media is trumpeting that a bipartisan solution has been reached. The birds are singing and all is right with the world. THERE HAS BEEN A COMPROMISE!!! And what, you may ask, is that compromise? Simple, the Senate is now going to pass the bill which the House sent to it a few weeks ago. That's right, the Democrats in the Senate have caved in and accepted reality. They have come to realize that even when they call the GOP hostage takers, the American people are smart enough to realize that the only dispute is about whether or not to subsidize twelve ridiculously expensive rural airports. The GOP did all that it could to keep the FAA running. The Democrats are the ones that cost the government a third of a billion dollars in lost revenue while they strutted on the stage and called the Republicans terrorists.
I hope that America realizes what fools these Democrat senators are and how much BS they are throwing out there in the media.
