Not leading, but still behind

The Syrian regime of Bashir Assad continues to slaughter dozens of people each day in an attempt to put down the protests that have swept that country. The death toll is now estimated to be over 2000 Syrians killed pretty much at random by Assad's special forces. Most had done nothing more than be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The reaction of president Obama has been muted, to say the least. After waiting for the killing to go on for weeks, the USA has now said that it "deplores" what the Syrian government is doing. That's it; nothing else has been done by the USA.

Today, the governments of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain, among others, withdrew their ambassadors from Damascus in protest against the indiscriminate murders of Syrians by their government. The American ambassador, however, remains in Damascus.

It is sad when the USA surrenders its leadership role to those paragons of human rights like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Obama said that he was leading from behind in Libya. In Syria, Obama is not leading at all. He does remain behind, however. Obama is delivering the worst of all worlds to America.
