Are they kidding at MSNBC?

Across the web, today's chatter includes the suspension of Pat Buchanan as a commentator for MSNBC. According to the stories, Buchanan was bumped after he wrote in his latest book about the "death of Christian America" and the decline of the country. This was racist in the view of the MSNBC hierarchy.

How ridiculous is that? MSNBC is the network that televises Al Sharpton every weekday. Sharpton, of course, is the man who led a racist attack on Stephen Pagones and the Dutchess County (NY) Attorney's office on the basis of a phony claim that these evil white men sexually attacked and abused Tawana Brawley, a local black teenager. Of course, the claims were obviously false and Sharpton knew that. Indeed, he later lost a slander action brought against him on this matter. In order for Sharpton to lose, the court had to find that he intentionally published false information about the plaintiffs. So it has been determined as a matter of law that Sharpton spread anti-white racist lies, but MSNBC keeps him on the air. Sharpton also used race baiting to incite a crowd that then burned down a shop in Harlem owned by a Jewish merchant. People died in the fire. Sharpton also used race baiting to help incite the riots in Crown Heights, Brooklyn that led to death and mayhem. But MSNBC keeps Sharpton on the air.

Look, I do not like Pat Buchanan, and I think his views about the supposed death of Christian America are stupid. He should not be dumped off MSNBC, however, unless that network first gets rid of some much bigger racists.

I haven't seen him in a long while on MSNBC. I agree this is absurd without a better explanation. And Reverand Al is a moron.

jbperello asks why I think that Buchanan's view on the death of America as a Christian nation are stupid. Here is my answer in a nutshell. The overwhelming majority of Americans are Christians. Look at the strength of the evangelical churches and you can see that these folks are not going anywhere. It is true that some of the churches that have moved away from religion and more into social justice have lost members, but most of them are going to other Christian denominations. There is a cultural bias in a few places like New York and LA that promotes secularism and places limits on some of the edges of religious behavior, but for the most part, this has strengthened believers not weakened them. Buchanan is raising a false alarm.
