The role model for president Obama, former president Jimmy Carter, came out today to accuse Newt Gingrich of racism. Of course, Carter based his statement on a lie. It brought back memories of the late seventies when Carter sat in Washington presiding over national decline and repeatedly lying about it.
Carter was on Piers Morgans's show, so essentially no one saw the interview, but, nevertheless, Carter said that Gingrich was using subtly racist rhetoric to appeal to the wrong elements in South Carolina. And what was the proof offered by Carter? Gingrich keeps saying that "black people should get jobs" according to Carter. Gingrich also talks about "welfare mothers" and the need for people to learn to work. That's it, nothing more.
Carter, of course, was making it up as he went along. Gingrich does not say that "black people should get jobs." Gingrich says that poor people, especially poor children, should be taught the worth of work and trained so that they can get jobs. Gingrich speaks eloquently about how the GOP values helping those who will help themselves, while the Democrats speak only about giving handouts. It is not an issue of race; it is a question of personal dignity and self reliance.
The real truth is that after listening to Carter make anti-semitic statements for years, I find it funny that this jerk would accuse someone else of racism. Nevertheless, it may turn out that having Carter as an enemy will help Gingrich. There are too many people who recognize Carter for the failure he truly was.
