Just another day in Syria

In the last twenty-four hours, a bus carrying prisoners was attacked in northwest Syria; at least 16 people were killed and more were wounded. Syrian government forces were also attacking anti-government army deserters who have joined the opposition in Jebel al-Zawaiya near the Turkish border. Another government attack was taking place in the city of Jisr al-Shughour which is close to Lebanon. These are just the biggest killing fields in "peaceful" Syria. Meanwhile, since those protesting against the tyranical Assad regime are not getting help from any outside powers, various terror groups like al Qaeda are moving into the country to "take charge" of the efforts against Assad. In other words, since the USA, the UN, the EU and the Arab League are sitting by doing essentially nothing, the revolt is being coopted by the worst sort of Islamicist terror groups. When Assad does fall, we may see something even worse arise in Syria.

So what is president Obama and his administration doing about the situation in Syria? Yesterday brought the news that the USA was considering closing its embassy in Damascus because the Assad regime could not guarantee the safety of embassy personnel. Translation into English: since al Qaeda is moving forces into Syria, American representatives are leaving to avoid being terror targets. Nothing is being done to move Syria towards a better outcome once Assad falls. Nothing is even being said about how things should end in Syria. Those who are protesting hear the silence from Washington and Obama; they understand that they are on their own. As a result, they are accepting the leadership of al Qaeda and its ilk.

Haven't we yet learned to see the danger signs of events like these? Is Obama really so wrapped up in his re-election that he cannot make time to try to prevent a country from falling to the terrorists? The answer, unfortunately, seem to be yes.
