Racism from the Department of Justice

I do not know who coined the phrase, but the "racism of low expectations" is once again spewing forth from the Department of Justice. Eric Holder, the Attorney General, spoke in South Carolina and noted the DOJ's strong commitment to protecting voting rights. Holder and the other speakers also said that they would oppose the various laws proposed around the country to fight voting fraud since these laws supposedly target minorities. Let's take a closer look.

The various laws regarding voting fall into two different groups: the first calls for photo ID to be presented in order to vote; the second calls for shortening the period during which early voting remains open. The objection to both groups of changes are totally ridiculous. Photo ID is needed for so many things in life that yet another such requirement is hardly discriminatory. One cannot fly, enter many buildings (including federal office buildings), conduct many financial transactions (like cashing a check), open a bank account, and the like without a photo ID. But under the racist view that comes from Holder and the Obama Justice Department, the black and Hispanic citizens are so incompetent that the government has to protect them from the requirement to have photo ID to vote. That is ridiculous. Then you have the shortened period for early voting. This is done to save money in these times of austerity. Under the Obama reasoning, blacks and Hispanics are so incompetent that they cannot manage to get in to vote on one of the eight days that the polling can occur. These minority folks need another week for voting as well or they will be disenfranchised. The Obama view is insulting to minorities and, as a result, it is racist as well.
