President Obama issued regulations Friday afternoon on the use of drones by the Justice Department. Among other things, drones cannot be used to discriminate based upon race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Think about that for a moment and realize what that seemingly innocuous language means. Let's assume that there was a terrorist attack threatened against a target in Chicago. Drones with cameras could circle overhead in the city looking for suspected terrorists using facial recognition software. If the suspected terrorists were Moslem and members of a particular mosque, one place the drones might watch would be the neighborhood around the mosque. Obama, however, does not want that. Watching only that neighborhood would be discriminatory. The government would now have to also watch poor inner city neighborhoods and wealthy lake shore neighborhoods as well. If the government wants to look for the suspects in the Moslem area, it must also look in Polish or Ukrainian neighborhoods of the city. In other words, instead of concentrating efforts where they are likely to do the most good, the government will have to spread its resources around in the name of equality.
It's no wonder that these regulations were issued on the Friday before Memorial Day. The White House doesn't want anyone to see them.
