It had to happen sooner or later. Governor Malloy of Connecticut is trying to bring Washington to Hartford. Malloy is no longer going to debate issues; instead, he is planning on just sticking to personal attacks.
Here's what happened. The legislature is debating a bill that would lessen penalties for certain types of crimes, especially drug offenses in the areas around schools. You know those signs that proclaim an area a "drug free school zone"? Years ago, the state increased penalties for trafficking in drugs in those areas. Over the last few years, Malloy has attempted on multiple occasions to get those extra penalties rescinded, but he has been rebuffed by the Democrat controlled Legislature. He is trying again. This time, however, Malloy decided that since he cannot win the argument on the merits, he would resort to personal attacks. The governor said yesterday that those who oppose this bill (most Republicans and many Democrats) are "racially motivated". Got that? If you oppose reducing penalties for drug crimes in school zones, you are a racist. It was a move typical of Obama's Washington where anyone opposed to the president is branded a racist no matter what the facts.
Fortunately for our state, the response in Hartford was not the meek one most common in Washington. The Republicans in the legislature made a lot of noise about Malloy's statement and the upset was so great that the legislature had to adjourn for the day. By dinner time, the Democrats were in full retreat; the leader of the party in the legislature came out and criticized governor Malloy for his statement which he called both unhelpful and untrue.
Governor Malloy ought to be ashamed. I'm sure he is not, but nevertheless, he ought to be.
