Over the last month, there has been a firestorm about whether or not Hillary Clinton gave access or favors to those who donated to the Clinton Foundation or who hired Bill Clinton to give speeches for outrageously high payments. Hillary has ducked all questions on the subject, but Bill has commented. He told the world that he might continue to give speeches because he "had to pay the bills." Many thought that these were tactics to deal with a problem, but that the Clintons had learned their lesson and would stop taking cash in this manner. We now know that the Clintons have not changed their conduct at all.
It has been about a month since Hillary declared her candidacy for president. Since that time, Bill Clinton has given four paid speeches and been paid $1,110,000 to do so. These figures come directly from the financial disclosure form filed by Hillary with the Federal Election Commission. The speeches were given by Bill to Oracle Corporation, Unavision, Apollo Management Holdings, and the American Institute of Architects. Is there anyone who believes that none of these four have business with the federal government? Of course not. In the course of a five minute search, I learned that Apollo Management Holdings has an investment, among many others, of more than one billion dollars in EP Energy Corporation. EP Energy is a large producer of unconventional oil and gas from fields in Texas, Louisiana, and Utah. Were Hillary to get elected president and the debate to begin over proper regulation for fracking (that's what unconventional oil and gas means), are we to assume that she would "forget" the huge payment that Apollo Management Holdings made to the Clintons for Bill's speech? Without a doubt, each of these entities has issues with which a new president will have to deal.
It's also worth noting that even in the few days since Bill said he "had to pay the bills," he has given speeches that netted him three quarters of a million dollars. That's fifteen times the median annual income for the average American family.
The Clintons just don't get it. They cannot go on having Bill collect millions from companies or individuals who will have issues before the president during the next few years. The Clintons really think that the rules just don't apply to them.
One more thing: Politico reports that even the financial disclosure form filed by Hillary with the Federal Election Commission leaves out a batch of payments for speeches that were required by law to be disclosed. Bill and Hillary gave some speeches and had the payments sent to the Clinton Foundation. In other words, there were millions more in payments received by the Clintons for their speeches during the last two years than the $25 million that they have disclosed. It is hard to imagine that after all the stories about their using the foundation to hide cash going to them, that Hillary would "overlook" the fees paid for speeches where the payment went to the foundation.
It's been said in the past that the Clintons have no capacity to know shame. Now we have to add that they have no capacity to distinguish right from wrong when it comes to their personal actions.
