In today's news comes the final push by AP to help Democrats in today's election. The new theme is that divided government with the Democrats controlling the White House and the Gop controlling Congress will be very bad for the economy. As AP puts it: "A standoff between the Obama administration and emboldened Republicans will probably block any new help for an economy squeezed by slow growth and high unemployment. Congress might also create paralyzing uncertainty for investors and businesses by fighting over taxes, deficits, health care and financial regulation."
To say the least, the AP's point is nonsense. First, it has been the purported "cures" from the Democrats that have kept the economy from recovering quickly from the recession. Second, the uncertainty that has paralyzed business has come from the whole host of possible new regulations and laws that the Democrats have wanted for the last two years and from the failure of the Democrats to act with regard to the tax levels for 2011 and beyond. Indeed, it is crazy to assume that the Republicans could do worse with tax matters than the Democrats have done for the last two years. As the biggest tax increase in history has loomed on the horizon to go into effect in January of 2011, the Democrats have sat on their hands. They have not even proposed a bill to deal with that tax increase.
Hopefully, once the election has passed, the AP will move a bit more towards the truth. It would be nice if the articles at least have some relation to reality.
