They will never understand

Today in the Daily Beast, Tina Brown writes about how Obama needs to embrace the theater of the presidency in order to win in the future. Brown, the queen of snarky liberal journalism, believes that the reason for the impending win by the GOP is Obama's noble desire to change the way Washington works so that substance would triumph over form. She actually thinks that if Obama had gone to church each Sunday with his kids in tow that the GOP would not have done nearly as well. It is another attempt by a lefty to explain that Obama is just too good and too intelligent for the country to understand. He needs, according to Brown, to descend to the country's level in order to be successful.

What utter nonsense! Only a failed liberal journalist like Brown could actually miss the main story of the election. This is not a rejection of Obama's lack of theatrics. Indeed, the results have essentially nothing to do with how Obama's programs were explained. this is a wholesale rejection by the American people of Obama's program of big government, big spending, crony capitalism and intolerance of those who do not agree. it is about Obama's breaking the single most important promises of his campaign: that he would govern as a post partisan and post racial president. Clearly, once Obama broke those central promises in a very public and unmistakeable way, Obama lost the right to the benefit of the doubt. If things are bad, no one is willing to give him another two years to make a difference.

Brown just misses this entirely. I guess living the affluent life in the Manhattan liberal bubble does not allow someone like Brown to come close to perceiving reality. Still, if Obama follows Brown's plan for the next two years, we will just see more and more upset with him.
