I finally got around to watching "Avatar" on cable the other night, and I was quite surprised by it. First let me say that it is extraordinarily well done and interesting to watch. That said, I have to add that the film is extremely political in its message. Indeed, most of the characters are more caricatures than real people. There are the evil corporate bosses who only care about profits, the psychotic marine colonel who revels in death and destruction, the pure native people whose land and way of life are threatened by the evil earthlings, and the compassionate scientist who is trying to stop the evil attacks by her own people. Finally, there is the hero, a wounded warrior from earth who has an epiphany an learns the value of the local culture. The film is a cartoon version of anti-imperialism, anti colonialism, anti-capitalism, anti-militarism, ecological purity and the inherent superiority of cultures other than the Western one showcased. The film teaches its audience that the true hero is the man who fights against his own culture and indeed destroys it in favor of the poor downtrodden but noble natives.
Hollywood leftist thought is nothing new, but I was truly surprised to see how far it permeates this highest grossing movie of all time.
