A different Kind of Bubble

I wrote earlier about the current economic/financial bubble in which the country is drifting.  I was struck this morning by another bubble that is out there, namely, the media/government bubble that covers most of Washington, New York, LA and other centers of the liberal establishment.  What reminded me of this bubble were the articles from the progressive media about the great trap that president Obama laid for the Republicans with his State of the Union speech.  Let me explain.  According to libs like Jacob Weisberg at Slate, Obama put forward a very specific program that he wants to get passed by Congress.  That gives the GOP a choice:  it can pass the bills (which it does not like) or it can face the wrath of the electorate in 2014.  According to Weisberg, failure to pass Obama's agenda will enrage and motivate the Obama supporters to such an extent that they will vote the Republicans out of office in 2014 unless they go along now.

So why do I see this as proof of a bubble?  The answer is simple.  Poll after poll shows that nearly all of the Obama agenda is opposed by more people than support it.  Obama pushed climate change legislation.  By more than two to one, the public opposes any such legislation that also would slow the economy as Obama's old cap and trade plan surely would do.  Obama also wants higher taxes.  Again the polls show that there is no constituency for any broad based increase.  Further, we just had an enormous tax increase, so it will be hard for there to be much voter upset about no further voting on this issue.  Obama also wants action on gun control.  While the polls show support for items like improvements in background checks and some other minor points, there is no support for confiscation or registration of weapons, even if it were constitutional (which it is not).

The liberal media write their analyses after seeing the world from inside their bubble.  For them, the rest of the country does not exist.
