According to a report from NASA, there is a large sun spot which is forming on the surface of the sun which could result within a week or so in creation of solar flares. Solar flares are ejections of large amounts of energy and matter from the sun. If they hit the Earth, the flares can cause all manner of interference with communications as well as electronic systems. The satellites in orbit around the Earth are particularly vulnerable to such flares.
I just have a prediction to make here. In my opinion, we will see some report in the next two weeks that blames the flares on global warming or some other activity of humans. After all, just last week a reporter questioned whether or not the meteor that exploded over Russia was caused by global warming.

Every time there's a coronal mass ejection [CME] from the sun there is a battle cry that communications sytems/satellites will be knocked out of service, yet (as of now) even the biggies never seem to cause the predicted havoc. Sure, some day there may be a big kahuna CME that will mess with us, but for now the fear of these events seem to be just a lot of hot air.
