The Triumph of Gossip

Earlier today I wrote about the nonsense being "reported" about happenings in connection with the Carnival Triumph, the cruise ship currently being towed into port in Mobile Alabama.  There have been no reporters on that ship to determine conditions aboard.  There also has been essentially no direct communication with the passengers for days.  In other words, the folks on television who are supposedly telling us what is happening on the ship actually have no idea what they are talking about.

Since I wrote that post, I happened to watch "The Five" on Fox News.  They opened the show with a segment on the Carnival Triumph.  Among other things, Eric Bolling announced that the ship was intentionally being kept off shore of Mobile by Carnival so that it would only come into port after dark.  Bolling stated that Carnival wanted to prevent there being pictures of the passengers disembarking.  Really?  Has Bolling never heard of lights?  Does he really think that news reporters can't take pictures once the sun goes down?  How dumb is he?

Bolling also announced that there is no food for the passengers on the ship.  He asked why Carnival could not have helicopters drop MREs on the ship even if only for the pregnant women on board.  Again, one has to wonder where Bolling gets his facts.  We know that since the problems on board the Triumph began, other ships have come alongside on numerous occasions to drop off supplies.  No one is starving.  Sure, there was one passenger who told his relatives that he was in line for a hamburger when they ran out and he had to have a sandwich of onions and pickles on a hamburger bun.  That is hardly equivalent to starving pregnant women left to fend for themselves.

The same show also announced that the passengers were building "shanty towns" on the ship.  More nonsense!  With almost no power on the ship, the air conditioning systems are not working.  That means that folks who were staying in inside cabins (those without windows) were basically left in darkened rooms with no ventilation.  Not surprisingly, many of these people have apparently decided to sleep outside on the deck in order to get more air.  That is hardly a "shanty town".

What will come next for The Five?  Will they change the "fair and balanced" FNC motto to "we make it up as we go along"?
